How to find your personal style

Are you tired of feeling like your wardrobe doesn't reflect who you are? Finding your personal style is very important as it affects our self-esteem, confidence and also how others see us! What you wear is the first impression that people get of you, so it should mirror who you are!

Finding your personal fashion style can be a daunting task, but it's an essential step in building a wardrobe that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Here are a few tips on how to find the style that truly represents you!

1. Use Pinterest as a mood board

My #1 tool for everything regarding inspiration? Pinterest!

Create a mood board and start pinning styles that you really love, that inspire you and that you can imagine wearing. Once you’ve pinned them, go back and analyse your mood board. You will most likely see a pattern in the pins. Is your overall look dominated by neutrals? Is it more chic, sporty, vintage, colourful? This should be the foundation of your journey to find your personal style.

2. Identify your lifestyle and current wardrobe

Once you’ve created the mood board, you will be enthusiastic about finding those types of clothes. However, before you start running into the stores, take it slow!

Remember that your personal style should reflect your lifestyle.

Does your mood board consist of more sporty clothes, but you are actually an office gal, then combine those types of styles and focus on a sporty chic style. Taking a look at your current wardrobe can help you as well.

3. Get as much inspiration as you can

Before investing in a (new) wardrobe, take further inspiration from fashion magazines, fashion blogs and social media.

Who are your favourite fashionistas and content creators?

What are the outfits you are dying for?

Scroll through the feeds of your favourite Influencers and think of similar pieces that you already have in your wardrobe to try them out. Don’t be afraid to mimic them in your personal, unique way.

And similar to the Pinterest tip above, this also helps you to analyse why you gravitate toward certain outfits. For example, I am obsessed with the style of Allegra Shaw and Hailey Bieber which is a mix of chic, sophisticated, sporty and oversized. And this is what my wardrobe looks like as well! After recognizing these patterns, I knew what I liked, how I wanted to dress on a regular basis and what I should go hunting for when shopping.

4. Build a capsule wardrobe

Take all your inspiration from Pinterest, Instagram and fashion magazines etc. and create a list of staple pieces that your favourite outfits consist of.

Invest in high-quality, timeless pieces that you will absolutely love wearing. Look for pieces that can be dressed up or down, such as a classic white shirt, a well-fitting pair of jeans, and a versatile blazer. Take a look at our blog article “How to build a capsule wardrobe”.

5. Be confident

Reinventing your style and trying a new style of clothes can be intimidating. Experiment with unique style choices, colours and play around with different clothes.

To sum up, take as much inspiration as you can before you actually invest in new pieces! And remember, style is timeless. Someone who is stylish may or may not follow fashion trends but they always stay to their own aesthetics and style.
